Education and Outreach in Manchester
In addition to the Court hearings, a number of other activities are planned as part of the Supreme Court's sitting in Manchester between Monday 6 March and Thursday 9 March 2023.
As part of the four-day programme of hearings and events, Lord Reed, President of the Supreme Court will be joined by Lord Hodge, Deputy President of the Supreme Court, Lord Lloyd-Jones, Lord Burrows, Lord Stephens, Lady Rose and Lord Richards.

Monday 6 March 2023
In the morning, prior to the first hearing, Lord Reed, President of the UK Supreme Court will be welcomed by His Honour Judge Bird, Senior Circuit Judge at the Manchester Civil and Family Justice Centre.
Vicky Fox, Chief Executive of the UK Supreme Court, will meet with Afzal Khan MP, Labour MP for Manchester Gorton. Further meetings with other Labour and Conservative Members of Parliament will follow later in the week.
That evening all seven Justices will meet judges of the Northern Circuit.
Tuesday 7 March 2023
Vicky Fox will meet with Lorraine C Worsley-Carter MBE DL, the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester.
Lord Reed and Lord Hodge will both speak at a local chambers, which the other Justices and Chief Executive will attend.
Meanwhile, Lord Stephens, accompanied by his Judicial Assistant, will judge a moot at the University of Manchester, followed by a question-and-answer session with the students.
Wednesday 8 March 2023
In the morning, Lord Stephens and his Judicial Assistant will take part in an 'Ask a Justice' session with sixth form students from a local sixth form college.
Lord Reed and Vicky Fox will meet Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester and Kate Green, Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester.
Lord Hodge, Vicky Fox, Registrar Laura Angus and a Judicial Assistant will take part in a User Group meeting at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre, where they will hear feedback about the processes of the UK Supreme Court.
That evening, moot events will take place at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre. Lord Burrows and his Judicial Assistant will judge a moot with the University of Bolton, and Lord Richards and his Judicial Assistant will judge a moot with students from the University of Derby.

Judicial Assistants provide vital support to Supreme Court Justices, including joining them in court for hearings, carrying out important research and drafting concise summaries of judgments for the press and public. The Court appoints up to ten Judicial Assistants each year. They are qualified lawyers, solicitors, barristers or advocates, qualified in one of the UK jurisdictions, who have completed a training contract or pupillage.
This talk provides an opportunity to hear from Lady Rose of Colmworth, Justice of the Supreme Court, current and former Judicial Assistants, and the Supreme Court's Head of Human Resources on what the role entails and how to apply for the 2023-24 vacancies.
After the talks, they will open the floor to a 'question and answer session' too.
The event is free to attend and open to the public. It may be of particular interest to qualified solicitors and barristers who might be interested in applying for this opportunity at some point in the future.
